WRITING ON Dance

At Imagery, we have a passion to influence a healthy dance ecology and nurture feature leaders in our field. Step one was creating the Fellowship Position in 2018, and in the fall of 2020 we took another step. The pandemic crisis and events brought to light many social, racial, and economic injustices in our field. This made apparent many hard conversations that need to take place about ballet and our role in this world.

Imagery believes that the intersection of dance and the written word can open up new avenues of understanding for artists and audiences alike. It is at that fertile crossing of disciplines that we, as a community, can center and address the pressing issues we face today.

From 2020 to 2021, we invited long-time collaborator Sarah Cecilia Bukowski to write several articles as Imagery’s Writer in Residence. We asked Sarah to go beyond the non-verbal communication of ballet to express and investigate topics and issues of the art form we all love so dearly. We invite you to explore writings on dance from Sarah and other stakeholders in our field with our blog below.
